In honor of April being National Poetry Month my preschoolers have been creating lots of different projects based on poems. I usually introduce a new poem every month based on our unit but this month we have been learning a new poem every week. My kids love it! They get so excited each time they see a new poem on the board and ask to read it at least four or five times in a row.

Below are a couple of our projects and the poems that go along with them.

LiIMG_4461ttle bird, little bird, fly around,

Up to the sky, down to the ground.

Little bird, little bird flap your wings.

Open your beak and sweetly sing.

Little bird, little bird, fly to your nest.

Now it’s time to take a rest.

This bird craft was super simple to make. All you need are paper plates, construction paper for the beak, googly eyes, paint or markers and glue.

Raindrops, raindrops

Falling all around!

Pitter-patter on the rooftops,

Pitter-patter on the ground.

Here is my umbrella.

It will keep me dry!

When I go walking in the rain,

I hold it up so high.

When the rain is over

And the sun begins to glow,

Little flowers start to bud

And grow and grow and grow!

These poetry books are one of my favorite projects we’ve done this year but they are also the most time-consuming. The kids have been illustrating their favorite poems that we have learned throughout the year and making them into a book. The best part of this project is hearing the kids still reciting poems we learned months ago. The turkey poem we learned in November is still being said almost daily in April!
